Chapter 20 - The Magician's Deliverance

Bokanary,   Egonas and Xaddin each held their swords in the 'pose of challenge' as the Derulan guards dressed in black viewed them, uneasily. They all knew that if the provocation was accepted, it would mean they would have to fight to the death. No warrior could surrender once the battle began. A cold sweat appeared on the guard's forehead as he looked into Bokanary's eyes. Slowly, his sword was raised to shoulder height. If he faced it to the right, then the challenge would be accepted. Suddenly, he lowered it and slid it back into its sheath.

"Forgive me, my king. Law or not, it is you that I follow."

A sigh came from Bokanary as he approached him. The two other guards dropped their swords and extended their hands to him. A smile came to Bokanary's face as he looked to them. "I won't forget this when Flyton is defeated. Now, you must return to your chambers and change into your silver mail like the rest of those who follow me..." The three bowed to him and left the room. Egonas turned to Kristopher for a moment and then looked to Bokanary. "It is the Keeper that Flyton wants. He must stay here until the battle is over..."

Kristopher rushed to the sorcerer's side. "Stay here?!! I can't hide here while you all leave to battle the enemy!"

"The key is what is important. And the Keeper. Flyton must not find you."

Kristopher knew that the magician was right, but he wasn't happy about it. He expected Kari to comment on the situation, but, surprisingly, he remained silent.

Egonas smiled sympathetically as he saw the grief in the young warrior's eyes. He moved to the window and looked out into the courtyard. "The search is growing. We must prepare our attack!" Just as he finished these words, the Derulan guard, Capal, entered his room running swiftly to Bokanary's side.

"My lord...The word as been spread to all of the guards still loyal to you. It appears that Flyton has knowledge of your presence here..."

"The river..." answered Egonas. This was followed by a puzzled look from Capal.

"I will explain it to you later..." said Bokanary.

Egonas moved to the centre of the room and looked to those who surrounded him. "It's important that I face Flyton in the courtyard. It's there that all will be decided. Say nothing of this to anyone. He mustn't suspect that I know his connection with the river."

"Let's just kick these guys' butts and get the hell outta here." complained Kari. Capal looked to him for a moment and then turned back to his king. He whispered something to him and turned toward the door. Bokanary looked back to the angered Lostarian and then to Kristopher. Without looking away from him, he said, "There's no time to waste! Please remember that most of these men feel that they are doing what is right...I...please just remember..."

Seconds later they were heading along the gray stone corridor. Kari didn't like the idea of leaving his friend behind, but he agreed that it was the best thing for him. As they traveled, they were greeted by the sound of revolution. Bitter curses were being cast. The sound increased as they moved into the interior of the castle. Lighted torches hung from the walls on either side of the hallway.

Soon, they neared a junction of two corridors. They could tell by the sounds ahead of them that they had reached an area of battle. As they passed through the juncture, they entered a large room where several soldiers were engaged in battle. Some were dressed in black mail and the others in silver. As they entered the room, Bokanary called out to them and the battled stopped. Each man looked to him in silence as he moved toward them. His name was whispered by many of them as they looked to the powerful figure of their banished king.

"I have returned, my friends...I have returned to rid our home of Flyton's treachery. Derul must not be ruled by this evil man..."

"But it is the law..." said one of the soldiers dressed in black. "A law that we must obey!"

"Then it is time for the law to be changed. Our home has always been the most important defense against Dolnar's evil! More so then Realm herself. We are the last stronghold before Eyama, a sanctuary for the Tull. Such a great city must not be ruled by one such as Flyton! The laws made by our forefathers were made for their time. Now those laws must be changed. No Derulan blood must be shed. Please trust me. My father would've counseled as I do now!"

One by one, their swords slid back into their place of rest. One of the soldiers dressed in black moved toward the rightful ruler of their home and said "You are right, my king. I have never liked Flyton and I will follow him no more! I will obey your commands!"

"As will I..." said one standing next to him.

        "And I..." said another...

Bokanary smiled as he looked to them. "Then you must return to your rooms and change into your silver mail. All who still follow me will know that you have joined the revolt!"

"Not all will follow us..." said one of the guards. "There are many who will follow the ruling of the king to their death."

"Yes...They can't be condemned for their loyalty to the crown, although it hurts our chance of victory. Go now, spread the word. I don't wish to have any more of our people hurt by Flyton's evil!"

Bokanary's commands were dispersed throughout the massive castle/city. The halls and aisles stretched out for miles past thousands of rooms. Their search for followers continued for hours. Egonas had remained silent as they fought many small battles. Bokanary forbade the shedding of blood except as a last resort. He found that many of his people were willing to revolt against Flyton. Yet, sadly, not all joined him.
^^

The quest for more followers continued as night approached. After being silent for several hours, Egonas finally stopped them. His gaze shifted all around them and a worried look came to his face. His voice was loud and showed great concern. "This can't be!"

"What is it pops?!" Kari asked mockingly. Egonas remained silent for a few moments. He then turned to the young guard standing beside him

"Capal...Have you ever seen Flyton become confused and tired?"

"Oh yes…often. He is not a patient man."

"Did you notice him going near the well in the courtyard afterwards?"

"As a matter-of-fact, that is exactly where he goes. He seems to have a conversation with himself whenever he goes there."

        "Just as I thought..."

Bokanary asked the aged magician to share his thoughts with them. Kari asked him not to.

"It is best that you wait for that knowledge," replied the sorcerer. "Flyton has access to a great power and I don't want my plan to be in your thoughts. At least not all of it. We must find the room in which Flyton is hiding. I need to face him alone. You will wait outside the door. After I've been with him for a few moments, you will hear a thunderous crash from within the room. At that moment, I want you to rush in and call my name..." They waited for the magician to explain his plan further, but he became silent. It soon became obvious that Egonas couldn't be coaxed into revealing any more. Even Kari gave up trying.

They searched for about an hour until a lone guard dressed in silver ran up to them. He seemed very anxious as he fought to catch is breath. Bokanary placed his hand upon his shoulder. The guard finally began to breathe easier and he raised his right hand announcing that he was about to speak.

"My king...I know that you are searching for Flyton. I have seen him enter into the Room of Kings!"

Bokanary became very excited. "How dare he defile that holy room with his evil presence?!?!! Quickly, we must reach him before he spreads his filth throughout the resting place of my father and forefathers!!!"

Egonas moved to his side and shook his aged head. "You must think with the mind of a king. If you don't follow my instructions...it would mean my death."

        "Big loss..."said Kari.

"Then let us delay no longer!" continued Derul's rightful ruler. "I cannot stomach the thought of him in that room!" Moments later, they were heading down the stone halls toward the final resting place of Derul's great leaders.

It didn't take long to reach it. The door shone with regal shapes formed of gold, diamonds and other precious items. They stood a few feet away as Egonas moved closer. As his hand neared the large handle, he turned back to them.

"Remember my instructions...This is our only chance." He then rushed into the room. He discovered Flyton standing amidst glimmering jewels. The ceiling bore carvings which portrayed Derul's history. As their eyes met, a look of horror fell upon Flyton's face. Egonas' look changed only slightly as he raised one eyebrow.

Silence filled the room as they eyed one another. Flyton grew more horrified as the moments passed. Finally, Egonas broke the silence.

"Well, Flyton...or Thera. Which do you prefer? We meet again after so many years!"

"How did you know I was here, Egonas? I left no trail for anyone to follow."

"I didn't come here looking for you. The fact is, I probably would've passed through Derul without meeting with you if you hadn't created those guardians to keep me out. I didn't know you were here until I sensed your celestial presence while in a corridor not far from here. I'm surprised that you didn't feel mine."

"My magician's powers have all but left me since..."

"Since you sold out your fellow sorcerers to Nolebes? But he didn't give you the power that he promised you, did he?"

"Sold out?!? Is that what you call it? What were you all doing to me?! I was victimized by you and your arrogant fellow conspirators. I was always left out of your fellowship! The misfit! None of you dared to call me friend, fearing that the others would treat him as you all treated me!!! I owed you nothing!!!"

"You earned the ridicule you received, you fool! We warned you many times to renounce your interest in black sorcery. We knew what was ahead for you and we wanted to help you! Believe me, if we had known that you were as far into it as you were, you would have received more than just ridicule! You gave Nolebes a threshold with which to invade our order. A threshold that led to the destruction of our race."

"Yet, I am not here for revenge. I wish to stop you from falling further than you already have. You must renounce your fellowship with the demon Quolot. She will only lead you along the same path that Nolebes once led you. Let Bokanary return to the throne and let the Keeper pass so he may free us to move on."

"Give up the throne?!? You will never change, Egonas! I'll not give up what is mine!!! Haven't you been listening to me?! I owe you nothing!! Don't insult me!"

"Then you owe it to Morok...and Viraucus...and all the others that suffer daily because of your mistake!"

"Leave me old one! I grow tired of you and your false morals!"

"So be it!!! Cala atra spal due!!" Immediately, his sword returned to the appearance of a staff. Thera reached down and grasped his own staff and the two stood facing each other. Outside the door, the others waited impatiently for the loud crash that Egonas had told them would appear.

A foreign sensation filled the room as the two ancient magicians faced one another. A confrontation such as this had not taken place for thousands of years. Egonas slowly approached his opponent. His stare didn't waver even to blink. They held their staffs tightly with both hands and tensed their entire bodies. Suddenly, a thin beam of red light shot from the end of Thera's rod. Instantly, it was blocked by Egonas' and he returned one of a bluish hue. It too was blocked. Moments later, the room filled with a cascade of red and blue lights that gave the appearance of an exploding rainbow.

The battle continued for some time until Egonas drove his staff into the stone floor, producing a thunderous crash. Moments later, as they had been instructed, the others burst into the large stone room, calling out the magician's name. Egonas looked to them, leaving his guard down for a second. That was all that Thera needed. A red beam flashed across the room, knocking Egonas to the floor where he lay motionless.

Deep laughter echoed off of the ancient stone walls as Thera looked to him. Bokanary tried to reach for his sword, but he and the others found themselves paralyzed. Thera appeared to be pale and weak as he looked to them. Slowly, he stumbled to the door and escaped down the hallway. Soon, they found that they could once again move and they ran to Egonas' side.

"What kind of plan was this?" asked Bokanary.

"The only one that could possibly free your people." Egonas replied weakly.

They each stepped back as the sorcerer rose to his feet. "The only way I can conquer Thera or Flyton if you wish, is to return him to the river which is the source of his power. We battled until I felt he had weakened enough and then I summoned you. I dropped my guard long enough for him to use all of his remaining strength by striking me with his light. I knew that he would suspect I was planning something if he defeated me easily, so I used your entrance as a way he could do it. By now, he is heading for the well. This was the only way I believed I could get him there without revealing my intention."

"Are you sure it's not because you are an old man and you knew he could kick your butt?" asked Kari. Xaddin placed his powerful hand upon the young Lostarian's shoulder. His vise-like grip told him that it would be a better plan to remain silent.

        "What now?" asked Bokanary.

"It's not over yet. The Keeper must pass through your city. I will go to finish the battle with Flyton. If I do not return, Xaddin must take my place as Kristopher' leader. I will be able to communicate through him."

Kari gestured that he was about to comment, but remained silent as the giant Derulan guard tightened his grip.

"Listen carefully, my boy..." said the aged magician as he glanced to Kristopher. "Remember that you have a great many powerful people behind you." He paused for a moment, looking to Kari. "The road to destruction is lined with..." He became silent for a moment and then fled from the room. Bokanary watched him disappear and then instructed the others to follow him.

Egonas moved at the same speed that he sensed Thera was traveling. He wanted to be sure that Thera would reach the well undisturbed. He silently followed him through the maze of corridors that made up the massive castle/city. As he passed a large window, he noticed that it was now very dark outside. He was sure to move just fast enough to follow Thera without being noticed. Finally, the series of corridors ended as he reached a large wooden door that was ajar. Outside, he saw Thera standing by the well, just where he had predicted he would be.

Derul's false king appeared to be exhausted as he stood slightly bent over. His head slowly rose as Egonas approached him. "Will you give me no peace Egonas?! None of this concerns you!"

"I am here to warn you, Thera. You must cease this witchcraft and return to your practice of white magic!"

"Again I say. Leave me! I am too old and tired to argue with you! I should've known that you couldn't be stopped as easily as it appeared you had! You are just like all the others! You persist and persist. You can't stand it when someone does something outside of your precious order! As far as I am concerned, it is you who are wrong!!"

"In the name of the Light, Thera!! Listen to yourself!"

"I renounced the Light and everything it stands for many years ago, you old fool! It is time you met with my forces! Chava Tiem Coloma!!!"

"Thera!!! No!!!" Immediately, seven black spirits appeared.

"Cala atra spal due!" cried the sorcerer and the entire courtyard lit up with light exploding from his staff. Egonas stood, surrounded by the black figures who cursed the light that shone from his rod.

"Surely you know what you have done, Thera! Coloma is the ancient curse of Quolot! Now you have brought it upon yourself! Did you not study the lore? Look to these seven! Look upon your fate! Now you have brought this curse upon yourself!!" Thera became horrified as he realized what he had done. The books that he had been studying did not tell of this kind of fate befalling those who called upon the power of Quolot.

Unknown to Egonas, Kristopher had been watching all that had been transpiring through the window of the room wherein he'd been hiding. He watched as the seven black spirits began an evil laughter. Suddenly, they moved directly above Thera and slowly descended into his body. Their laughter continued, now through him. A distant flame seemed to burn from his eyes as he looked to Egonas. Suddenly, all seven voices sounded from him as he began to repeat..."Coloma...Coloma Biel... Coloma... Coloma Biel..."

Egonas knew that Thera had now joined with them. He watched as Thera's face changed into a number of hideous shapes. The courtyard was still lit brightly by Egonas' staff as the terrified Lostarian watched from above. Thera didn't move from the well as the seven voices continued to call out vile curses through him. Suddenly, the ancient sorcerer yelled "In the name of the Light!" He then leapt toward Thera, grasping him by the shoulders. Kristopher caught his breath as both of the magicians fell into the well. He was unable to utter a sound as the light from Egonas' staff stopped shining from it. Moments later, the courtyard was engulfed in total blackness.

Kristopher called out the name of the magician as Bokanary and Xaddin leapt into the room. Kristopher's face was covered with a blank expression as he looked to them. "They are gone...into the well..." was all he could say to them. Bokanary explained to him that they too had witnessed the encounter.

"He knew that this was going to happen..." said Bokanary. That is why he said that Xaddin should lead you on the next part of your journey if he didn't return. He said that he would be able to communicate with you through him somehow, although I don't understand what he meant."

"Where could he have gone?" asked the disheartened warrior.

"I have no idea. But I promise you that his act of great courage shall not be forgotten. The moment he defeated Flyton, I regained the leadership of Derul. Thanks to him, my people are free once again. His name shall be remembered along with all the great men of our past. I promise you this."

The word of Flyton's defeat spread quickly through the city. Great rejoicing could be heard everywhere and Bokanary announced that a feast was being held in honour of Egonas...`the savior of Derul'. Bokanary decreed that Egonas' name would be added alongside the other heroes that were honored every year. The feast was indeed a large one. The Derulan people rejoiced loudly. Although Kristopher was surrounded by great happiness, he was unable to join in the merriment as his thoughts were on Egonas. Kari showed no signs that he was at all upset by the magician's horrible fate. He had a beautiful Derulan woman on each side of him. This was more of what he was used to and he was taking full advantage of the situation.

"Come on, Kristopher...shake if off. Let's party! Make the most of this, old buddy. No sense cryin' over split milk..." He smiled to his friend as he tightened his grip around the young ladies. "This place is full of babes! What's your problem?" Kristopher just looked away as Kari spoke. The younger warrior saw the pain in his friend's eyes and he excused himself from the ladies' company and moved to his side.

"Don't worry about him, man. The old guy can take care of himself. Don't let it get you down. Tonight is tonight. We've got to leave for home tomorrow, so let's make the most of what this place has got to offer."

"You know damned well that I'm not going home, Kari! Why would you even suggest it?"

"Kris...I've been your closest friend for a long time. I put up with your moods and your uncle and everything else because I love you like a brother. It's over man! The adventure has reached its end. You don't owe these people anything and it's time we went back to our side where we belong. We'll look up that Solta babe that you're hot for and get back to some kind of normal life!"

Kristopher shook his head and looked away for a moment. He then looked back to his friend with an angry expression on his face. "Say hello to everyone back in Lostar. I don't think I want you to accompany me any farther."

"I know you don't mean that!"

"I wish I didn't. I'm leaving in the morning with Xaddin. Just the two of us. I'm sorry Kari. I've reached the end of my rope." As Kristopher began to rise to his feet, Kari placed his hand upon his shoulder, rising with him.

"OK. I'm sorry. I won't say anything more about it."

Kristopher looked to his friend for a moment. It hurt deep inside as he held his friend's gaze. He knew that Kari would be unable to remain silent as he had promised and that he would continue to try to convince him to return to their home. He had to admit to himself that the young warrior might succeed, now that Egonas was gone. In fact, the prospect was very, very inviting.

"We'll say our good-byes in the morning."

        "Kristopher..."

The older warrior then turned to Bokanary, thanking him for his hospitality and announced that he would be retiring for the night. Kari watched as his friend left the room and he felt a lump come into his throat. The two ladies that he had been with moved to his side and each grasped an arm. He immediately pulled away from them and told them rather impolitely to leave him alone.
^^^^^^^^^^

As dawn arrived at the city/castle, a knock came to Kristopher's door. He woke immediately. Although he had slept for just a few hours, he found that he was wide awake and refreshed. He called out an invitation to enter the room and the door slowly swung open. Bokanary and Xaddin entered. An anxious look came to Derul's leader as he faced the young Lostarian.

"After what I saw at the well, I don't want it widely known that you are leaving this morning."

Kristopher agreed. As he dressed, he looked out to the courtyard. Memories of Egonas flooded his mind and he began to miss the aged magician. The sun gave hints that it would soon be rising as he drew a deep breath and turned back to them. "Where is Kari?"

"I haven't seen him since late last night. I was surprised that he didn't retire early."

"He won't be accompanying Xaddin and me. I..."

"A wise move. To be honest with you, I was surprised that he was allowed to travel with you this close to Eyama. I'll tell him that you will be leaving shortly."

"Thank you, but I would prefer that you let him sleep." said Kristopher as he reached the doorway where they were standing.

"As you wish. Two horses are being prepared for you now. As soon as we have eaten, you must leave."

The three men left the room, moving down the gray corridor that led to the royal eating chamber. Two guards saluted them as they arrived and the large doorway opened, allowing them to enter into a beautiful room. A long table stood in the centre of the room. Four places were set, each with fruit, toast and various foods the like of which Kristopher had never before witnessed. Bokanary seated himself at the end of the table and instructed one of the guards that there would just be the three of them eating there.

Kristopher and Xaddin sat on either side of Derul's leader. Just as Kristopher was about to start eating, he noticed someone moving to his right. He turned that way and caught his breath. Standing a few feet away was a young woman who looked enough like Solta to be her twin. He turned back to Bokanary asking him if she was from Realm.

"In a way, I suppose. Derul was built by the Realmen people years ago as a means to watch Eyama. Though we now feel that we are our own people, our roots are in Realm. Through the years, we have learned how to hide from Dolnar's mind, although it has become harder lately as he has grown in power. I'm afraid that Xaddin won't be able to accompany you all the way to Eyama, but he will take you close enough that you will be able to find it..."

Their conversation during the meal turned to Lostar and to other things relating to Kristopher's side of the mountain. Each time the young serving woman approached them, Kristopher felt his heart skip a beat and he realized how much he missed Solta. Finally, they finished their meal and Bokanary announced that it was time for Kristopher to leave. They left the room and traveled along the stone hallway toward the front of the castle. Kristopher's knees felt weak as they approached the doors that would lead him on his way. This was it. The last part of his journey! The doors slid open as they neared them and a faint gray light flooded the corridor.

Outside, two guards faced them, each holding the reigns of a Derulan horse. Immediately, Kristopher and Xaddin mounted them. Bokanary placed a hand on each man's shoulder and smiled. "I wish that I could be accompanying you..."

Kristopher reached out his right hand to him and the two grasped forearms. "I'll see you again after I have finished with Dolnar..."

Bokanary then turned to Xaddin. "Look after him, old friend..." The large Derulan mute saluted his leader and then offered a smile. After a few moments of silence, Bokanary instructed them that they should wait no longer and they motioned their horses to lead them away. Moments later, they disappeared into the dawn.

They traveled at a quick pace as they moved through the narrow city streets. They passed very few people as they continued along the cobblestone roadway. Finally, the city gates came into view. Four guards pulled them open, allowing them to pass from the tremendous city/castle. They noticed that the sun was beginning to rise as the gates closed behind them. An outline of the mountain could be seen far off to their right. Ahead of them, they could just make out the rolling hills that were the Derulan Meadows.

Immediately, they motioned their horses northward towards the mountain peak known as Eyama, which Kristopher had been told should become visible by noon that day. They moved along cautiously, never bringing their horses to a full gallop as it would be a long journey and they didn't want to tire them. The sun rose higher as they moved along the beautiful green meadow.

Kristopher noticed many varieties of unrecognizable flowers growing in abundance all about him. Some he remembered seeing in the enchanted forest that he and Egonas had traveled through. This brought memories of his journey with the sorcerer and he missed him more. Soon, the sun rose above the horizon. He turned to find that Derul was now a tiny spot far away to the south. His thoughts shifted to Egonas and the many stories the two had shared during their short journey together. Xaddin rode in silence beside him. The large Derulan's eyes shone through his silver helmet/mask with a great light that seemed to hint of a vast knowledge. Kristopher could sense that he wanted to speak, but was unable to.

The morning began to age. Kristopher felt an unusual feeling of contentment flow through him. The meadow seemed to come alive and he felt a spirited awareness. Birds sang from the treetops, filling the air with music. For a moment, the young Lostarian was sure that he heard his name sound from above. He listened closer discovering that words were indeed being sung, although many of them were unknown to him.

Suddenly, he noticed that their song seemed to change. It became harsh, almost fearful. He looked to Xaddin who was gazing towards the treetops. "Do you understand their words?" The guards' nod told him that he did. "Is something wrong? Are they warning of some kind of danger?" A nod told him that they were. Slowly, Xaddin's hands moved to his back and he made a motion that represented wings. Kristopher stopped for a moment. "Skullots?" Once again, Xaddin nodded his answer.

Kristopher began to scan the treetops, but nothing could be seen save for the blue sky. He felt his entire body tense as they moved along the green meadow. Scattered trees offered some protection above them, but there weren't enough of them to ease the fear in his heart. After a short ride, they reached a lovely garden. Thousands of multicolored flowers grew all around them. A clay pathway moved through the middle of them creating a wide road. They rode upon it side by side and the many different fragrances that flowed from the flowers began to soothe Kristopher's heart. He soon forgot about the Skullots. He began to feel weightless and carefree. He felt as if he was floating along...

Countless visions of peace and tranquillity flowed through his mind and a contented smile came to his face. All the things that had brought fear to his heart drifted away beyond memory. All of his cares were now far away and he felt himself drifting further into a dream-like state.

Suddenly, the trance was broken as Xaddin grasped his right shoulder. As Kristopher looked to him, he found the guard motioning ahead of them. Turning that way, he saw an elderly man standing before them on the clay pathway. His appearance reminded the young Lostarian of Egonas. Beside him stood a young woman with long black hair. She was dressed in a blue robe-like gown. The two men halted their steeds as they reached them. They dismounted, standing before them. Kristopher felt could see great wisdom in the old man's. Suddenly, Hemma's voice echoed softly in his heart. "Trust this man...he is here to help you..."

The elderly man raised his hand to them and said, "I am called Kylar. I have come to lead you through the garden."

"Yes, Hemma has told me that you will help me."

"Hemma has spoken to you? I can't believe that he would take such a risk so close to Eyama. It is important that he blocks the Skullots' minds from Dolnar! He should have known that I would remember the prophesy."

        "What is that?"

"Many, many years ago it was said to me that the Keeper would appear in this garden with one who could not speak. Upon helping him, I would finally be allowed to move on to the next stage of the journey here." At that moment, the young woman, who was standing one step behind him, moved to his side. "Forgive my rudeness...This is my daughter Yama."

"I am Kristopher...and this is Xaddin. He has indeed been cursed to silence."

"Then the time has come! Thank the Light. You both must follow us to our home where you can wait until the Skullots are far enough away that it will be safe for you to go on."

        "The Skullots are close?"

"Yes, quite...But they cannot find you. You are in the Agathar gardens. There is a direct link with Realm here, although it has been lessened greatly since the passing of the ages. Our home is not far away." He motioned them to follow and moments later, the four continued along the path.

Kristopher and Xaddin followed on foot, leading their horses behind them. The pathway rose and fell over rolling hills, finally disappearing into a group of multicolored trees. As they reached the edge of the forest, Kylar turned to them. "We are almost there..." he informed them. Immediately, they entered the woods.

The beautiful sound of birds in song was much louder within the forest. As the midday sun shone through the leaves, Kristopher was reminded of Sheleta. Soon, a small wooden cottage could be seen through the thick tree trunks. Smoke gently flowed from a stone chimney and Kristopher could see brown shutters beside each of the many windows. Kylar seemed excited as he led them along the clay path that took them to the front door. As it opened the sweet smell of incense flowed from the doorway, soothing the Lostarian's heart. They each entered. A table was prepared with four empty cups and a large pot of steaming tea set next to them. Kylar led them to their seats and began to pour tea into each cup. He informed them that they were to stay in the cottage until the Skullots passed. Kristopher felt great peace inside as he sipped his tea. Kylar smiled as he looked to the Lostarian.

"I have had others...Tulls that is...stay here. None were as young as you though. I knew that they were not to go to Dolnar for the prophesy said that the Keeper who would oppose Dolnar would be accompanied by this brave guard." He motioned to Xaddin as he spoke.

Just as he did so, Xaddin jumped from his seat. He strained as if he was trying to speak. Kristopher watched as a cold sweat appeared on the large Derulan's forehead. His mouth opened and uttered a grunt. He seemed exhausted as he returned to his seat.

"Don't give up..." said Kylar. "Your speech may return in time, if that was meant to be. For now, be grateful. The same curse that has robbed you of your speech has also enabled you to hide from Dolnar's mind and thus can you accompany the Keeper of the Key. What an honor that is."

Xaddin returned to his seat and sipped some tea. Kylar then stood for a moment, looking to the ceiling. Kristopher asked him what he was doing and the old man raised his hand to silence him. Slowly, his gaze turned back to the Lostarian. "The Skullots are near. Don't worry, they can't find you here." He still held up his hand as he began to look all about. Suddenly, a smile came to his face. "They're gone. It will soon be safe for you to continue to Eyama..."

"Is there anything that you want me to do father?" asked Yama in a soft voice.

"You could tend to the horses to be sure they are ready to continue."

"As you wish..." Immediately, she left the cottage.

"It is good that the Skullots gave up their search here so quickly." He

continued, "I was afraid that they might stay too long and you would have to stay here until morning. It would be very dangerous for you to pass by the Haunted Mountains after dark."

"Haunted Mountains?" asked Kristopher with an obvious hint of fear in his voice.

"That is where Quolot's Lair is."

"I heard Egonas speak of Quolot. Who is it?"

"There are many theories about that. Many think of her as a black witch. No one is sure, but all agree that she is not of this world. I have heard it said that she is from another dimension known as Coloma." As he spoke that name, Kristopher caught his breath, remembering the encounter between Egonas and Flyton.

"I have reason to believe that that may be true..." he said, half to himself.

"It is said that she takes her victims to the other dimension. This has come to be known as Quolot's curse. And is why I wouldn't want to let you pass the Haunted Mountains at night."

As he finished these words, the door opened and Yama entered the room. Kristopher sipped the last of his tea and rose from his seat. The others sensed his intention and followed his lead. Yama held the door open and the three men left the cottage. They found their horses waiting there for them. The view was breathtaking and Kristopher found himself staring all about. Kylar then pointed to the north where a single mountain peak stood above all the others. "Behold...Eyama."

Kristopher stared at the soaring crown for a few silent moments. The realization of what awaiting him there suddenly became all too clear. His thoughts could not stay confined.

"Of all the lifetimes for this to happen...Why must it be mine?"

"Do not think this way, Keeper." said Kylar. "Your name will be remembered for thousands of years. You will be a hero's hero."

        "And what if I fail?"

"Do not speak so. Hemma will be with you. How could you possibly falter?"

"I wish I could be as confident as you, Kylar." He then took a deep breath and looked to Eyama once more... "I wish." he whispered.

After a few moments of silence, led him along the path in front of his home. As they reached the roadway, Kristopher and Xaddin mounted their horses. "It has been a great honor for us." said Kylar. I have waited for many years for this moment. This roadway will lead you to your destination. Do not stray from it and you will pass the Haunted Mountains well before dark."

Kristopher thanked Kylar and Yama and motioned his horse along the roadway. After a few steps, he turned back to them and smiled. He believed that he would not see them again. Once more he wished that he could be as certain of victory as Kylar was. The beautiful scent of flowers filled the. They continued northward along the winding roadway, moving ever closer to the towering mountain peak. Kristopher stopped for a moment and looked back toward the small cottage they had recently visited, but found that it was no longer visible. Turning back, he saw that they were approaching a large forest.

He reflected upon the warnings that he had received from Kylar. He wondered what Quolot looked like and an eerie feeling filled his heart. He found himself looking fearfully into the forest, now just ahead of them. As they reached it, he noticed that no birds were singing from the treetops. Silence surrounded him. He felt that a whisper would echo forever through the trees.
^^^^^^

They continued along the pathway for some time until they reaching the mountain's base. They were completely surrounded by thick forest and the blue sky became visible only when there was a small break in the trees. Soon it became noticeable that sunset would arrive in just a few hours. Suddenly, a small group of trees to their right began to shake lightly. Both men halted their horses and unsheathed their swords. Kristopher felt his heart beat faster as he waited. Then a small figure emerged from the bushes. It was Yama! Relieved, he returned his sword to its place of resting. This move was followed by the Derulan soldier.

"Why are you here?" asked the puzzled Lostarian.

"My father neglected to tell you of the shortcut that we often use to pass the Haunted Mountain." He studied her for a moment and then said, "Your father insisted that we don't stray from this path."

"I love my father and he means well, but I think he puts more into the Quolot legend than it deserves. No one has seen her nor her followers near these parts. You will be safe as long as you stay away from the Haunted Mountains. Besides, my path will get you to your destination much sooner than the road will."

Kristopher then looked to Xaddin who also held a look of concern. "I thank you for your advice, Yama. But, we will travel along the path that Kylar has suggested we take." Yama's look seemed to change as he spoke. He read anger in her eyes as he informed her of his decision. Suddenly, she began to look into the trees quite anxiously.

"I'm afraid you may not have any choice in the matter...The Skullots are close!"

Kristopher let out a long sigh. "Are you sure? I can't feel them!"

"Quite sure! I have lived in this forest all my life and I've encountered them many times! Trust me. They are close. You must get off of the road until they pass. Please follow me!" With that, she left the pathway and entered into the forest. Kristopher continued to protest, but still found himself following the young woman. Xaddin's sigh spoke his feelings about leaving the road.

They followed her in silence as she guided them through the forest. Finally, they reached a path that led up the side of the mountain. Without hesitation, she moved along it, disappearing into the trees. The two men followed and Kristopher began to feel a strange sensation inside. Could it be the Skullots? A quick observation of the area revealed that the birds here were silent. Yama began to grow excited as they moved higher up the mountainside. The sun was now showing signs that it would be making its descent in just a few hours and Kristopher became horrified.

"Yama!! What's happening? The sunset is not due for a long time from now!"

"Don't be concerned. The dusk appears earlier here because of the mountain. You will make it past the Haunted Mountains in plenty of time. We are almost beyond them now."

Just as the sun seemed to be setting in the west, they reached a large opening in the side of the mountain. Yama turned towards the two travelers. "This tunnel will lead you past the forest unseen by anyone looking for you. It comes out very close to Eyama."

Kristopher was relieved to hear these words and he thanked her for her help. He and Xaddin released their horses and entered, finding it very dark. Suddenly, a high pitched laughter echoed all around them followed by the sound of clashing steel. All about, torches began to light themselves. Their light revealed that they weren't in a tunnel, but a large cave! Looking back toward the entrance, they found it covered by steel bars. Yama suddenly changed into a hideous woman dressed entirely in black. Her eyes were cold and distant as she looked to them.

"Welcome to Quolot's Lair." she said. Then she disappeared.

Metal bars blocked their escape. The two men stared past them as the sun slowly set behind the trees, bringing darkness to the forest. Kristopher cursed himself again and again for being so easily deceived by Quolot. Anger filled his heart. Slowly, his gaze turned to Xaddin.

"Forgive my foolishness..." he whispered. Xaddin managed a smile. Suddenly, Kristopher felt Hemma's mind reaching out to him. But, something was blocking his thoughts. A bright yellow glow appeared in the middle of the room. Slowly, it transformed into the dark body of Quolot. An evil laughter passed from her lips as she observed her captives.

"There is no escape, little one. My power is far beyond anything that your puny mind could ever imagine! And I shall be even more powerful when the key is mine!" She waved her hand towards them and the two men found themselves unable to move. Her laughter continued. Kristopher fought intensely, but was unable to break her spell. "I know that I can't take the key from you, but I can make you give it to me."

Suddenly, a hole about ten feet wide appeared in the floor in the middle of the room. Ghostly growls and screams echoed from it and flames began to rise out of it. The flames seemed to turn into faces as they rose a few feet above ground level. He was unable to look away as they licked the air. Quolot's laughter increased. Kristopher could feel Hemma's thoughts reaching out to him, but no words could be heard. Kristopher still found himself unable to look away from the flames as Quolot again spoke.

"These are my servants. They come from Coloma Biel!" The Lostarian felt himself shaking as she spoke. The memory of Egonas' battle with Flyton found its way into his thoughts. Quolot waved her hand again and Xaddin lifted from the ground. He moved slowly across the room until he was directly over the large hole. The flames seemed to grow higher as the silent soldier hovered above them.

His face revealed the terror in his heart. He tried desperately to free himself from her grasp, but it was useless. Kristopher found that control returned to his right hand. "Place the key on the ground beside you!" commanded Quolot.

Kristopher wanted to reach into his pocket and remove the golden key, but his heart fought him. He didn't really know who or what Quolot was, but he could sense that she was capable of great evil. His right hand inched its way towards the key as she commanded him once more to give it to her. Once again, he found the strength to refuse. Xaddin suddenly lowered closer to the rising flames as she demanded the key a third time.

Kristopher discovered to his horror that he was surrendering to her will as the Derulan soldier drifted just above the inferno. The young Lostarian found himself fingering the key as he watched his companion floating above the fiery pit. Quolot's face possessed an evil smile as she viewed him. Immediately, she raised her right hand and Xaddin rose high above the flames.

Kristopher felt her cold stare cut through his heart. He watched, almost like a spectator as his hand began to pull the key from its resting place. Seeing this, Xaddin became very excited. He tried to call out just as he had attempted to do in Kylar's home. Kristopher's hand stopped for a moment.

A familiar feeling entered his mind...Skullots! Quolot confirmed his suspicions by her reaction. "Surrender the key immediately!" she screamed. Suddenly, a deep and unfamiliar voice called out.

"Do not listen to her! It will mean the end of us all!"

Kristopher turned toward the flames to discover that it was Xaddin who had called out to him! He wondered how Flyton's curse had been lifted from him! "Is it possible that Egonas had defeated him? Could the magician be alive!?" he thought. "Is this what he had meant when he had said that he would communicate through Xaddin?"

The flames fell below ground level and Quolot became very excited. She shouted words that Kristopher didn't understand and Xaddin fell toward the pit. The Derulan cried out as his hands caught the side of the abyss. He held on with all his strength as his legs dangled above the flames. Suddenly, the steel bars fell noisily to the ground and two Skullots entered the cave. Quolot moved towards them immediately.

"Be gone! You are too late! You shall not have what is rightfully mine!" As she screamed, Kristopher felt control return to his once paralyzed body. Quickly, he moved to the pit and grasped Xaddin's hands. In one motion he pulled him from the hole and the two stood together, swords in hand, facing Quolot and the two Skullots. Kristopher could hear the voice in his head grow louder as he stood with Xaddin. He strained to hear it for a moment and then it came to him. "Cala Atra Spal Due!" Immediately, his sword began to glow. Quolot and the Skullots became visibly horrified as they looked to the shining weapon. All three began to back away as the two men approached them. The Skullots fell to their knees and covered their heads.

Kristopher looked down at them for a few moments. Then his sword came down quickly and their heads were separated from their bodies. Suddenly, two black mist-like shapes floated from the dead carcasses. Kristopher and Xaddin stepped back as they hovered above them. A soft voice came from one of them.

"Do not fear us. You have done us a great service, for you have freed us..." As he spoke, the two changed from black to white. Another voice followed. "Oh...It is so good to be free after all these years. We have paid dearly for our mistakes, but have been freed by Cala Atra...A spell even older than the one that imprisoned us. Thank the Light that this has happened now. Dolnar has not been able to find us for Hemma has been shielding our minds from his. Yet, Dolnar's power is growing. It would not have been long before we would have told him that we had encountered you here."

"Travel with caution," said the other. "Do not hesitate to use the Cala Atra..." As these words were finished, the two ascended and disappeared through the roof of the cave. Quickly Kristopher turned to Quolot who held a sword in her right hand. "It's not over yet!" she screamed. "I still possess great power!"

"Surrender and I shall be merciful." Kristopher said softly.

"Surrender?!? I have no intentions of submitting to you!"

Kristopher stood before her and held his sword above his head. He offered her another chance to drop her sword and again she refused. "So be it!" was his reply and her head fell from her shoulders. Just as with the Skullots, a black cloud rose from her dead body. Suddenly, a multitude of voices called out from the pit. They were beckoning her to join them. She cried out horribly as her black spirit was being drawn into the pit - into the realm of her own creation.

Kristopher and Xaddin watched as the pit disappeared before their eyes. Xaddin placed his hand upon Kristopher's shoulder. "It's over..." he whispered. "For her and for me. Now that the curse has been lifted, I can no longer travel with you." As he spoke, they moved outside of the cave. It was now quite dark outside and they agreed that they should sleep the night and part company in the morning.

They set up a small camp and sat beneath a tall tree. They talked of Kristopher's journey and Xaddin repeatedly spoke of how honored he felt to have aided the Keeper. He told him how exciting it was to be able to speak again after being silent for so long. Kristopher's thoughts turned to Egonas. He wondered if he would ever see him again. Then, just before falling asleep, he thought of Kari.
^^^^^^

Kristopher woke up suddenly and looked anxiously about. He judged by the sun's position that it was midday. He became quite upset with himself for sleeping so long as he moved toward the area that Xaddin had slept. There was no sign of the Derulan guard! He looked around the vicinity, but there was no trace of him! He felt it quite odd that he would leave without saying goodbye to him. He looked back toward the cave where they had defeated Quolot the night before and wondered if she may have had something to do with it. He concluded that that wasn't possible and continued to scan the area for a clue to his companion's disappearance. He found none.

He sat on a log for several moments, hoping that Xaddin would return. He didn't. Finally, he realized that he couldn't wait any longer and set off for Eyama, alone. He moved quickly beneath a cloudless noon sky. After traveling for a short time, he discovered something that caused him to catch his breath. In the soft ground below him, he could see Ashtar footprints beside those of a man. Could they be Xaddin's? There was no way of knowing. But how could they be?

He stood for a moment, assessing the situation. He would reach Eyama by midday the next day if he followed the roadway. There was no way of knowing how long he would be delayed if he left to see if Xaddin was being held by the powerful creatures. He gazed at the enormous mountain peak for a moment and then into the forest in the area that the Ashtar trail led. Finally, a sigh came from his lips and his sword slid from its sheath. Although he felt in his heart that Egonas would have counseled him differently, he followed the Ashtar trail.
^^^^^^

After a short trek upwards on the mountainside, he reached a thin pathway that continued to rise higher up the range. He moved cautiously with his sword held tightly in his right hand. To either side of the thin trail, tall trees and bushes rose like living walls. Silence screamed all around and the sound of small twigs breaking beneath his feet seemed almost deafening.

His clothing helped him to blend into the brush, giving him at least a bit of confidence that he could hide if he needed to. After further travel, he found that he wasn't as weary as he should have been. He decided that the area was enchanted in the same way that the forest where he and Egonas had encountered that large creatures before had been. He stopped periodically to insure that he was following the right trail. As he reached a clearing, he looked to the north, Eyama stood above everything else - a towering reminder of the fate that awaited the young Lostarian. He continued a while longer until the trail changed to a northerly direction along the side of the mountain.

He rested for a moment, looking toward Eyama, now ahead of him. He followed the trail, moving toward both Eyama and wherever the Ashtars had gone. He continued to move cautiously while watching for any movement in the forest around him. Eyama loomed ominously before him. Suddenly, he reached a break in the trees/wall to his right. A quick inspection revealed that Ashtars had turned that way, heading higher up the mountainside.

He looked that way and then toward Eyama. He began to doubt his decision to follow the beasts. His gaze turned one way and then the other several times. What would Egonas say? Leave for Eyama of course! He fought a severe battle within his heart. Then he began to make his way up the mountain. Dolnar would have to wait!

He moved higher for some time. Silence continued to blanket the forest-covered mountain, making him more and more aware of how vulnerable he was. He moved, half crouched, with his sword held before him. He continued to fight an inner battle as he knew that Egonas would chastise him following this course.

The sound of the cracking leaves and branches beneath him was amplified by the fear of being captured by the Ashtars. At times moving up the mountain became difficult when the grade became much steeper. Finally, the trail once again shifted northward. He soon noticed that the moss beneath him was slowly disappearing revealing the rock beneath it. It became increasingly difficult to walk upon it and to follow their trail. He pace slowed somewhat.

The slope of the mountain changed drastically at times and he found he had to hold on to some of the small bushes as he moved along. Suddenly, he heard a sound ahead of him. It got louder as he stepped forward. Finally, he could make it out. The sound of rushing water! It was impossible to see too far ahead as the trees were thick in that area. He moved silently toward the sound of the rushing water. He could tell that it was just ahead as he reached the edge of a large gathering.

Passing the brush, he saw it! He was on the edge of a vast mountain range that continued on the other side of a raging river! He carefully searched the area until he found the Ashtars' trail. It led lower down the mountainside. Immediately, he began to walk that way as the river thundered far below to his right. Carefully, he moved along the plateau until he reached a bridge. Immediately, he tested it, finding it to be quite well made. It swayed gently as the wind blew across the canyon below. It was made wide enough for one person to pass along it at a time. He placed all his weight upon it and took a deep breath. Slowly, he began to cross.

His left hand grasped the rope railing beside him as he moved slowly. His gaze stayed fixed upon the other side of the canyon that he steadily moved toward. He could feel his hands trembling and his knees growing weak as he passed the midpoint of his journey. The roar of the raging water below was deafening. Suddenly, the bridge began to sway a bit harder. Panic filled his mind as he turned to find that he was no longer alone! Several Ashtars were making their way onto it! Immediately, he turned and began to move as quickly as he could towards the other side. The bridge began to shake as they followed him.

Then the air was filled with small stones that were being thrown at him by his assailants! Many of them flew by quite quickly as he ran with his head held low. Finally, a large stone hit him directly in the nape of the neck and he dropped to his knees. His vision became blurred as he fought to remain conscious. The battle ended as he fell to his chest unaware of his surroundings. His sword fell from his hand and disappeared into the water below. Dark dreams flowed through his unconscious mind as the Ashtars reached him. They immediately bound his feet and hands. Two of them carried him as the others followed, very excited by the catch!
^^^^^^

Kristopher's head pounded as he slowly regained consciousness. He found himself in a cold room surrounded by total darkness. Instinctively, he reached into his pocket finding that the key and headband were still safely there. He shook his head and tried to stand, but fell back down discovering that his right leg as chained to a stone wall. Suddenly, a deep voice sounded from the blackness.

"I wondered if they would find you..."

Kristopher leapt back as he realized that he wasn't along in the room. When he managed to calm himself, he realized that the voice was Xaddin's.

"What happened to you this morning?" asked the Lostarian.

"I heard a noise before you woke up. When I left to investigate, I realized that the forest was filled with Ashtars. I had to lead them away so that you could escape to reach Eyama. Obviously my plan failed."

Kristopher felt foolish when he thought of how he had been captured by the creatures. "What are they doing here?" he asked trying to change the subject.

        "Zagar brought them..."

        "Zagar?!? But Egonas killed him!"

        "I think not..."

"I saw him! I'm sure of it..."

"Well, I was before him not long ago and he seemed quite alive to me."

Kristopher was silent for a moment. Zagar was alive? If that were true, he would be seeking revenge for what happened before. "Where are we?" he asked.

"Quite close to Eyama. We are beneath the surface of the ground.

"They must have carried me a long way. Have you any idea what time of day it is?"

"It's hard to say. I've been here in the darkness for a long time. So you have faced Zagar? By the Light you have led an adventurous life!"

"My life was as normal as any other Lostarian's until the time came for me to receive the key. A lot has changed since then! I must admit, I have learned a great deal from the people of your side. I am starting to realize that things are rarely as they seem."

Silence filled the room for a few moments. Then Kristopher could hear Xaddin quietly moaning. He asked him what was wrong several times, but got no reply. After several moments, the murmuring stopped. Again, Kristopher asked Xaddin what was happening.

"It's Dolnar! He's searching for you! I'm afraid that he may find you if we are not separated!"
^^

For quite some time, silence filled the cold dark room as Dolnar's mind searched the area. Xaddin hid from him using the methods he had been taught as a Derulan. But, it was difficult for him, being so close to Eyama. Kristopher could sense Hemma's mind, but it was too distant for him to hear any words. Both men continued with their inner struggles until the sound of a key entering an iron lock echoed through the darkness. Noisily, a large door opened and bright light flooded into the room causing them both to have to shade their eyes. When they adjusted to the light, they found four Ashtars standing before them. Each held a sword ahead of him. One of them spoke in a very deep voice.

"He wants to see you." The tone of his statement sounded quite threatening. One of them put a key into the lock on Kristopher's shackles and he was free to stand once more. His legs ached under the strain of his weight as did his head. Unsympathetically they led him from the room leaving Xaddin behind. The large Derulan sat silently as the echoes of their footsteps slowly faded away beyond the large door. He grew fearful of what might happen to Kristopher and he cursed his inability to help him. Angered, he began to pull on the chains that bound him. Suddenly, a bright beam of light appeared from the ceiling.

Slowly, it descended to the floor. Terrified, he stared into it as several different colors shone from it's centre. He tried to back away, but the chains that bound him would not allow it. The light began to change shape. As the moments passed the silhouette of a man could be seen. It became more defined as the moments passed. He pulled harder upon the chains as the figure became more distinct. Then someone walked from the light...it was Egonas! Before Xaddin could say a word, the magician spoke almost in a whisper. "Be silent..." As he said these words he touched his staff to the chains and they immediately fell from his hands and feet. In a second he was standing.

"How...?" Before he could continue, Egonas interrupted.

"I have a great many powers that your kind wouldn't understand. Zagar is hungry for revenge. Follow me..." Before Xaddin could speak, the door to his prison opened. Immediately, the sorcerer ran from the room followed closely by the freed Derulan.

As they raced down the hallway, Xaddin noticed that light seemed to be shining from Egonas. It cast a mysterious glow onto the gray walls surrounding them. His respect for the magician grew as he could only imagine what must have taken place when he fell into the well with Flyton. They continued hurriedly down the long halls, surprisingly unchecked by guards although he expected to meet with them as they rounded every corner.

Finally, they reached a large wooden door. Xaddin fought to catch his breath while Egonas breathed normally. Slowly, the magician's hand reached down for the large brass door handle. He turned it silently and pushed the door open about an inch. Bright light beamed from the crack and muffled voices echoed into the hallway. They were too low for any words to be distinguished, but both men could tell that someone was yelling.

Egonas inched the door slightly and looked into the room beyond it. On the other side of a large stone chamber, Kristopher stood before Zagar. A towering Ashtar held each of his arms as the Nagard screamed at him. Egonas whispered to Xaddin, "Listen closely to my words. You must follow me as I run to Kristopher's side. Do not stop for any reason. If you are not by my side when I reach him, you will be doomed. Do you understand?" Xaddin's nod told him he did. Egonas drew a deep breath and then threw open the door. All of the guards in the room, including the two who held Kristopher turned to the two approaching men. Feeling their grips loosen, Kristopher pulled his arms free and began to run toward his friends.

Zagar became enraged. "You foolsss! Don't let them essssscape!" The room was filled with shouting Ashtars as Kristopher reached them. He was overjoyed beyond speech as he beheld Egonas. The moment he touched him, the three men were surrounded by a great white light. The guards stopped in their tracks, gasping at what they witnessed.

"What sssorcccery isss thisss??!?!?" As Zagar finished these words the three men disappeared before their eyes. Kristopher felt a whirling sensation in his head as they seemed to float. The next thing he knew, the three of them were standing in the forest. Kristopher was still overjoyed to see Egonas and he wouldn't let go of him. Finally Egonas pulled away.

"Alright, alright! There will be plenty of time for that later!" Kristopher felt his smile grow wider as he looked to the aged magician. Egonas handed the young warrior his sword, reminding him that he would need it since he had lost his own. The sun was setting in the west behind him as he again spoke.

"I don't know how you did it, but I prayed you wouldn't let me down! Still, it was beyond hope that I would see you again.!"

"Never underestimate the power of a Magician, lad. However, we will discuss it later. Zagar will be following us. We must move quickly into the forest."

"What have we got to worry about? If we see him again, you can make us disappear like you did inside."

"You have no idea of the risk I took using that spell. I will not try it a second time with Dolnar this close. Now follow me." Immediately, the three men moved into the forest as the sound of large beating wings echoed through the darkness.
