Chapter 17 - Derul

It   was late evening as Kristopher and Egonas moved through the thinning woods. They had been past the enchanted forest for some time now and fatigue was once again filling Kristopher's mind and body. Egonas showed no signs that he was affected by it.

"I must rest soon," the young Lostarian said in a soft voice.

"We are not far from the mountain. You must try to continue until we reach it."

Kristopher read the concern in the aged sorcerer's eyes. He drew a deep breath and nodded to him. The two then resumed their trek. As the day progressed, they had noticed that dark clouds were slowly moving above them, covering the blue sky. As time passed, the clouds became more dense and it became obvious that a storm was on its way. Egonas had remained quite throughout the day, pausing frequently to test the air. Occasionally, he would mutter something under his breath and when asked about it, he would reply that he was just a cautious sorcerer.

Finally, a dark outline of the mountain appeared in the distance. Kristopher could see how it turned northward to their left. A few drops of rain fell to their heads and they pulled their hoods over them. The forest had become much thinner...almost a meadow with scattered trees. As they continued, the approaching storm showed signs that it was going to be a fierce one. Kristopher reached deep within to find the strength to continue.

He was able to ignore his fatigue as they ran through the tall grass. The outline of the mountain became much clearer as the faint crashes of thunder sounded behind them. The rain was coming down harder and they were thankful that their hoods shed the water as well as they did.

"Soon you will be able to rest." said Egonas. "You will find that it won't take long to regain your energy. Some of the magic of the forest is still within you. After we rest, we will follow the Derulan Path until we reach Derul. There are friends there." Kristopher could remember seeing Derul on the map that had been given to him and he realized how far he had gone since leaving Realm. Flashes of light lit up the mountain ahead of them. Loud crashes of thunder followed. Soon, the storm was upon them. The grass below their feet became slippery. The sky became darker as the intensity of the storm increased. Kristopher was forced to wipe the water from his face as they quickly moved along.

They continued through the rain until they reached the foothills of the mountain. Egonas looked all about them for a moment and then turned to Kristopher.

"There's a path which runs along the mountainside's base. It will take us to a cave I know of where it will be safe to rest. From there we can make our way to Derul."

They moved northward as a cold wind began to blow from the southwest. They continued through the tall, wet grass as the storm began to rage in full force. Huge bolts of lightening streaked above them, followed by deafening crashes of thunder. The rain fell like blankets of water from the sky.

They ran through the storm for about an hour and Kristopher felt that he couldn't continue. Just as he was about to collapse, Egonas put his hand upon his shoulder. "This is it!" he said as he pointed up the mountain. Looking that way, Kristopher saw a small cave about twenty feet above them. The two made their way through the driving rain and reaching it, they immediately entered.

It was dark inside until Egonas touched his staff to the floor and a small fire rose from it. The glowing flames revealed that they were in a very large stone chamber. Kristopher stayed close to the warmth of the fire and looked about the stone walls. He noticed something peculiar poking through the back wall. His right hand rested upon his sword as he slowly made his way toward it.

Reaching it, he discovered there was, in fact, something emerging from the rock wall. He cautiously moved his hand against its cold, rough surface. It was badly corroded and was made of a substance quite foreign to the young Lostarian. He turned back to Egonas with a puzzled look in his eyes and a smile came to the aged magician's face. Kristopher found he could pull whole chunks of it from the wall and crush them in his hands.

"It is from a distant age that few know of," said Egonas. "Those of us who do, try to forget about it. Some call it the Dark Age, but it is more commonly called, The Age of the Machines. There isn't much known about that time, but it is generally accepted that it was the lowest point of this world's evolution. I read a bit about it, when I was studying to become a sorcerer. I still find it hard to believe."

"Please, tell me about it!" Kristopher sounded like a school boy when he pleaded with the magician.

"There have always been conflicts in our world. Some of incredible magnitude, but they have always been 'good' against 'evil' so to speak. All save the Dark Age. It was a time when we fought against ourselves! It started out quite innocently, but ended by bringing us to the brink of extinction!"

"What are mach...What did you call them?" asked the confused warrior.

"Machines. You are touching the remains of one of them now. They were tools that were made long ago. Tools that almost brought total destruction! I've read that some of them were used for the good of the people, but then there were the others...the instruments of pain and war! At first, these machines worked well until greed reached into men's hearts and overtook their desire to help each other."

"The need for faster and better ones created the need for their construction to greatly increase until their villages grew into cities of incredible size! Although these 'tools' helped them in their lives, they caused the air and water to become dirty...almost unusable! All of the people became very sick! Many, many people starved so that few could prosper!"

"The needs of the people became the jobs of their machines and they became lazy and weak. Soon, most of them were incapable of performing even the simplest of tasks. The world began to crumble and its people with it, until, it is said, a rebellion happened that almost destroyed everything. After the few who were capable of starting had recovered , they began to rebuild their world. They decided to put an end to the use of machines and to destroy the secrets of their creation and use. They, like the one in your hand, were buried deep beneath the ground. Thank the Light that that age came only once!"

Kristopher was speechless as he listened to Egonas weave his tale. He was astounded to find that people had been so foolish and shortsighted as to have allowed such a thing to happen. Outside, the rain pounded heavily against the ground as the two sat around the flame still rising from the floor of the cave.

Kristopher watched the flames gently dancing as he tried to picture what life must have been like for the poor unfortunates who had lived during the "Age of Machines". Despite the fate that had been cast upon him as a Tull, he was thankful that he had not lived during that time. He felt himself growing weary as he watched the fire. Seeing this, the sorcerer suggested that he sleep for a short while before they continued on their way to Derul.

About an hour later, he was awakened from a sound sleep and leapt to his feet. "How long was I asleep?" he asked in a worried tone.

"Not long. It's the magic of the forest. It will last within you for several days. You'll find that you won't need much sleep for a while."

Kristopher was amazed that he felt so rested. He felt strong and alert and for the first time in a long while, his heart felt light and free of worry. Outside the cave, the storm was at full force as heavy rain showered from black clouds. Every few moments, the meadow outside would light up from a bolt of lightning which would be followed almost immediately by a thunderous crash of thunder.

"This reminds me of the storm we encountered in Normat!" said Kristopher as he stared at the driving rain.

"This one is natural...not made by Dolnar!" answered Egonas. "He has no idea that you are heading this way.

Kristopher looked to his companion for a moment. The lines around his eyes seemed to reveal a great wisdom - an awareness that the young Lostarian had never encountered before. A sagacity that he hadn't viewed, even in Gondira or any of the other Elders.

"How much do you know about me?" he asked.

"Do you think it was an accident that I saved you from the wolves? The Elders aren't fools. They never spoke to anyone of my existence because they didn't dare to let Dolnar discover that I had survived the changing of the Ages. I know more about your quest than anyone. Unlike the Elders, I am able to send thoughts to the Skullots which confuse them without Dolnar being able to hear them. Otherwise they would be all around his prison, waiting for you. I rather enjoy it actually." A reassuring smile came to the magician's aged face as he looked to Kristopher.

"We can't afford to wait until the storm subsides, he continued. "Rain or not, we'd better be on our way." Kristopher agreed and the two left the warmth of the cave to continue their journey to Eyama.

They walked parallel to the base of the mountain slowly, finding it difficult to move along the pathway. Egonas explained that the trail they were on was known as the "Derul Path." It was the easiest course to take as it was the lowest point between two large hills. To the west of them was a vast wasteland that was one more result of Nolebes' mistake. To the east was the mountain itself. It would save them a great deal of time to travel this way through Derul.

"Is Derul safe?" asked the young Lostarian.

"The people of Derul have opposed Dolnar for centuries. Theirs is one of the final strongholds before Eyama and the Elders have equipped them with the power to counter his forces."

Kristopher was looking ahead as Egonas was speaking. A massive bolt of lightning flashed ahead of them. He could see two large hills, side by side. The path they were following led between them.

"That's the Derul Passage." said Egonas. "Beyond the hills lies Derul. We will be able to find shelter from this storm." Suddenly, the magician became silent and began to look all about. Kristopher asked him what was wrong and he replied that something didn't feel right.

        "Skullots?"

"No...they are far from here. It's something else. Something I can't..." Again, the aged sorcerer became silent. He paused for a moment and then shook his head. "Stay alert..."

That was a command he had not needed to issue to the young Lostarian as they continued along the pathway toward the passage. Kristopher's sword slid from its sheath and his knuckles whitened as he gripped it. They kept a steady pace until they reached the Passage. Immediately, Egonas put his staff before him.

"This is strange." he muttered. "I'm sure that Dolnar doesn't know we are here. Something is wrong!" Suddenly, three beams of light appeared between them and the Passage. Their view was transfixed upon the illuminations as they slowly changed into three monk-like guards each standing about thirteen feet in height. They were each dressed in brown robes and were gripping tall staffs.

Their faces were hidden inside their hoods, but Kristopher could tell that they were staring at him even though he couldn't see their eyes. He forgot about the storm as he looked to the tall figures. Egonas motioned him to remain where he was standing as he moved closer to them.

"Who are you. Why do you block our way?" His voice sounded very stern and powerful as he spoke to them.

In unison, the three answered, "We are the Guardians of Derul!" Their voices were louder than the thunder that crashed about them. Kristopher took three steps backwards, covering his ears. "We were created to keep the enemies of Derul from entering!"

        "Created by whom?" asked Egonas.

        "King Flyton...Ruler of Derul!"

"Flyton?! There is no such k..." He paused for a moment as he looked to the three guards who towered over him. "Please allow us to enter the city..."

        "What business have you there?!"

"We are merchants, come to meet with others of our kind."

"You can not lie to us! We can sense that you are not what you say you are. You are a magician! Our master has forbidden us to allow sorcerers to enter!"

"Why does your master fear magic?"

Silence followed. The three guardians hadn't moved since they had appeared. Suddenly, they approached Kristopher who held his sword before him. He was suddenly surrounded by a wall of fire that rose about ten feet from the ground. The flames seemed unaffected by the rain. Egonas tried to counter the spell, but found that he was able to do so. Kristopher could hear him cursing himself.

The guardians stared at the young Lostarian for a few moments and then pointed their staffs toward him. He fell to the ground behind the flames as he anticipated an attack from them. Suddenly, a loud, screaming voice sounded from the trees nearby. It was one that Kristopher recognized...Kari!

The flames lowered to the ground for a moment as the guardians turned to the figure that ran from the trees toward them. He held a loaded crossbow that he aimed at the three who faced him.

"Kris! Get outta there!" Immediately Kristopher ran to Egonas who instructed him to flee into the trees which grew on the mountainside. Kristopher protested against the magician's command. Egonas raised his staff above his head and muttered a spell. Kristopher found himself unable to disobey the sorcerer and headed for the trees. No matter how hard he fought, he found he had lost control of his will.

Kari released the arrow and it found its mark. The three guardians moaned as the one in the middle pulled the arrow from his chest. All three seemed to be dazed for a moment as the one held the arrow before them. It disappeared in his hand and they turned back to Kari.

He muttered an obscenity that was buried by the rain and quickly ran into the trees where Kristopher and Egonas were standing. The moment Kari passed into the forest, the guardians disappeared.

"They no longer know that we are here." said Egonas as he released the spell that he had cast upon Kristopher. Immediately, the two Lostarians ran to one another and embraced.

"Where have you been? How did you find me?" asked Kristopher as he wiped the rain from his eyes.

"I had some unfinished business to attend to. I'm back in action now though! Your trail was easy to follow. "As they released each other, Kari looked to Egonas. "Where'd you find gramps?"

Kristopher looked to Egonas and then back to Kari. "Forgive me. This is Egonas." He then faced the sorcerer. "And this is..."

        "I know who he is..."

        "You do? How...I mean..."

        "The other Lostarian..."

A puzzled look came to Kristopher's face as he looked from Kari to Egonas.

"I know a lot more than you may think. But, I'll let your friend explain it to you. For now, we must find an alternate route around Derul."

"No way, pal!" said Kari. "I can't believe you're followin' this meatball, Kris!"

Kari and Egonas locked stares. Finally, Egonas said "There is a cave just above us. We will go there to rest!" Immediately the aged magician started up the side of the hill. Kari didn't move as Kristopher followed the sorcerer. Looking back, Kristopher said "Come on! Let's get out of this rain!" Again, Kari exclaimed an obscenity and, letting out a loud sigh, he followed them up the mountainside.

Kristopher and Kari talked excitedly, as they followed Egonas. Kari wouldn't go into detail about why he hadn't joined them when they left Sheleta. He said that it involved a woman he had met. Kristopher reminded his friend that the Drompan women were only about three feet tall. A sardonic grin came to his face and told him he was quite aware of that fact.

Egonas continuously muttered to himself as he led them. He wouldn't turn around to answer any of Kristopher's questions about what was upsetting him. Kari laughed at the aged magician, making several comments about him being senile. The three moved up the mountainside for some time until Egonas pointed to their right.

"There is our refuge!" His words were barely audible over the sound of the storm. Looking to where he was pointing, they saw a small opening in the mountainside. They headed for it immediately. Reaching it, Lostarians followed Egonas into the cave. The sorcerer raised his staff above his head and it illuminated the large chamber.

It was massive. The ceiling rose to about twenty feet above them. As he had done before, Egonas touched his staff to the floor and a fire rose from it. Kari jumped back a few steps as the flames rose from the ground. "Not a bad trick for a guy who looks like he should be pushin' up daisies.

Kristopher scolded him and pulled him closer to the fire. He reluctantly submitted and the two friends moved next to it, allowing its heat to dry them. Egonas scowled at Kari as the three stood around the rising flames. A very uncomfortable silence filled the room. Finally, Kristopher could no longer stay silent.

"What is wrong?" He looked to Egonas as he asked the question.

The magician drew a deep breath and looked to Kari. His eyes shifted back and forth between the two Lostarians for a moment. "Let it be said that I don't agree with every decision that has been made regarding the Keeper. I will, however, abide by them!"

Kristopher looked to Kari and then back to Egonas who was staring into the fire. The magician then moved away from them and stood by the door of the cave as the rain continued to fall heavily. Kristopher looked back to Kari.

"What is going on? Why do the people on this side know so much about you?"

"You're askin' me? How in Hell should I know? I've said all along that you shouldn't be here! It was crazy for us to have ever left Lostar in the first place! I can't believe that you let yourself get hooked up with old farts like this one! I don't know why they know me or what they're talkin' about half the time, but I do know that it is insane to be headin' the way you are right now!"

Suddenly, Egonas rushed to them. "Yes, you would like the Keeper to believe that, wouldn't you?! You should listen much more closely to what the people from this side have been telling you. You have no idea what you are doing!"

"What I'm doing, old man, is trying to save my best friend from psychos like you!"

"You can't fool me, my young Lostarian! Unlike the Keeper, I know who you really are! I do not blame you for your efforts because I know you are sincere. I know you believe that what you are doing is right, but I'm afraid that you are wrong! I wish you weren't as pigheaded as you are!

Your determination would be a welcomed addition to our cause..."

"Give me a break, you old coot! What have you been smokin' anyway?" Kari looked to Kristopher who had remained silent during their argument. A look of confusion covered his face as he stared at his friend.

"I'm getting tired of this! What is everybody talking about?"

"I made a vow of silence regarding this subject" said Egonas, who was staring out from cave.

"And I've already told you that these people are a pack of loonies! If you've got half a brain in your head, you'll come with me back to our side of the mountain!" Egonas then joined them at the fire. His eyes revealed the rage that he was feeling. Slowly, the anger seemed to leave him as he looked to Kristopher.

"I thought I had prepared myself for this. I was wrong to say anything. I, of all people, should know that our fate can not be changed. Not by Kari and not by me."

Suddenly, a deep voice sounded from the cave doorway behind them. "Perhaps we might put a change into your plans!" The three turned to find two tall men dressed in silver armor standing just inside the mouth of the cave. Their heads were covered with silver helmets that partially covered their faces. Even through their armor, it was easily seen that they were very strong men. They both held their swords before them as they viewed the three standing around the fire.

Kari's sword slid from its sheath as he spun around to face the two. Kristopher's weapon appeared seconds later and the Lostarians moved toward them.

"Why have you invaded our home?" asked the one standing on the right as he removed his helmet.

"Your home?" asked Kristopher. "We had no idea. It's just a cave."

"A cave to you, perhaps...But to us, it is sanctuary."

"Why have you left Derul?" asked Egonas.

"We'd love to go return, but it isn't possible right now. Flyton has seen to that."

"Who is this Flyton who calls himself king? Where is Bokanary?"

        "Do you seek him?"

"Not necessarily", continued Egonas. "But, he was king when I was last in these parts. He was a good man and I can't believe he would approve of those guardians that blocked our way."

"Truer words have not been spoken. I am Bokanary! Those sentinels were put there after Flyton stole the position of king. He ..." He paused for a moment as he looked to Kristopher noticing the headband he wore with the Hemma stone placed in the middle of it. An excited look came to his face and his sword slid back into its sheath. He motioned the other standing beside him to do the same.

" Xaddin!!! We are in the presence of the Keeper of the Key!"

        "Oh, great..." sighed Kari.

"You are expecting the Keeper?" asked Egonas.

"It's alright...Xaddin and I are at your service. We can help you to pass through Derul. We know a way that Flyton hasn't yet discovered."

"It's okay, we're not going that way!" said Kari.

"I'm afraid we are." said Kristopher who turned back toward the two who stood by the door.

"We were going to try to pass Derul from above, along the mountaintop." said Egonas.

"It won't work..." answered Bokanary. Flyton has set up traps all over the mountain. It seems that he is expecting you."

"I don't trust you." announced Kari. "What about your buddy? He hasn't said a bloody word since he got here!"

"He would if he could. Xaddin was my head-guard. He opposed Flyton when he stole the kingship from me. His silence is the result of a spell that was cast upon him."

        "A spell?" asked Kristopher.

Bokanary looked to Egonas for a moment and then nodded. "We must move with extreme caution when we pass through Derul. From what I've gathered, Flyton is watching for you."

"Why have I never heard of this Flyton before?" asked Egonas.

"I have no idea. I can only tell you what I know and that is there's no other way to pass beyond this point except through Derul and Xaddin and I can help you." answered Bokanary as he placed the helmet over his head once again.

Egonas closed his eyes for a moment. He tilted his head back slightly and his long white hair slid down his back. Slowly, his head came forward and his eyes opened. "Yes, we need your help. We request that you guide us through your city."

"Speak for yourself, pops!" said Kari. "Who died and made you the leader of the pack?!"

Egonas shook his head and walked by the Lostarian on his way to the mouth of the cave. "Come along, Kristopher!" Kristopher's' eyes turned to Kari and he motioned him to follow them. A heavy sigh followed and the five left the cave and began their journey through the storm.

Bokanary and Xaddin had turned to the right, heading northward as soon as they had left the cave. They moved along the mountainside as quickly as they could through the storm. The trees grew close enough together so their leaves worked as a water shed. They slowly descended as they continued. Suddenly, Egonas stopped them.

"I feel the presence of the Guardians! What trickery is this?!"

"This is the only way we can enter the city." answered Bokanary. "The Guardians are close as you perceived, but they have no power up here." Egonas stared at him for a moment and then nodded.

"That-a-boy, gramps!" called out Kari. "Don't take any crap!" Egonas looked to him with an angry look in his eyes. "Did anybody ever tell you that you're beautiful when you're mad?" continued Kari. Egonas just shook his head in disgust. Kristopher was sure that he heard a snicker come from Xaddin, but the large man gave no sign of it when he looked his way.

The rain continued to fall as they journeyed. The ground was fairly clear of underbrush making it easier to travel, although it was slippery in spots. Bokanary didn't hesitate for a moment nor look back to the others as he led them toward his home. Suddenly, a faint sound appeared ahead of them. The heavy rain masked its identity, but they could tell that they were getting closer to whatever it was.

Finally, they were close enough to recognize it -a waterfalls! Finally, Bokanary stopped them. "There is a river ahead that will lead us directly below the courtyard within the palace!"

"Why is it unguarded?" asked Egonas.

"The river actually takes two routes. One turns to the north and the other continues below the surface of the ground, flowing beneath the city. There is a well in the courtyard that connects there. It will be dangerous, however. The river moves swiftly and we must be sure that we don't allow it to lead us past the well."

"What are we supposed to use to float down the river?" asked Kari.

"Small logs," answered Bokanary. "Xaddin and I have done it many times when we wished to enter the city."

They continued and the sound of falling water grew louder. Before long, the thunderous roar told them that it was just ahead. The forest began to thin and the rain was, once again, pouring on their heads. Before them stood a long row of thick trees and bushes that ran from left to right.

"The river is just beyond the trees." said Bokanary.

        "No kidding..." muttered Kari.

They reached the trees which acted like as a fence and immediately passed them. High above to their right was the source of the thunderous roar - a towering waterfalls. Kristopher estimated that the fall was about sixty feet. The water descended into a very large pond. Bokanary motioned them to wait as he and Xaddin disappeared into the bushes beyond the shore. Moments later, they came floating up to them on a group of logs.

"Quickly, each of you take one of these." Immediately, Egonas and Kristopher moved to the shore, grasping a log.

"Not on your life!" exclaimed Kari. "Kris...What are you doing?"

"It's the only way to get through the city." answered Kristopher.

"That's what he says. I don't trust him!"

"Then you'll have to wait here until I get back!"

"I should've stayed in Sheleta..." he muttered as he joined them at the edge of the pond. Moments later, they waded into the water. They submerged to their shoulders with their arms wrapped around the log supplied to them. They began to drift away from the waterfalls as the current began to pull them.

The force of the river began to increase and they found that it became difficult to hold on to the logs. Occasionally, Kristopher found himself being pulled beneath the water's surface until the magician's strong hand would pull him back up. The river 's course continued westward, down the gentle slope of the mountain's foothills.

Tall trees grew along both shores of the wide river. Kristopher didn't take the time to notice them, nor the storm that continued to rage as he fought to hold onto the log that was leading him along. It seemed at times that they were moving too fast to hold, but the reassuring hand of Egonas continued to assist him. Kari's complaints continued. This was starting to bother all of them.

As time passed, they found that the storm was easing. Gradually, the heavy rain became a light shower and the dark clouds above them began to break. Their speed began to lessen as the river grew wider until they were floating side-by-side. They were exhausted by the battle!

"This is just a short pause," announced Bokanary. "Soon, our course will lead us beneath the surface and the river will resume its speed!"

"I've got to rest!" demanded Kari.

"Not here." said Bokanary. "The Guardians are all around us. Besides, we have to reach the well in time to catch the changing of the guards. Only then can we make our way into the palace."

As they drifted along, Kristopher turned to Egonas. The were behind the others and Kristopher motioned that he wished to speak privately to the sorcerer. Egonas drifted closer to him and Kristopher whispered.

"I was told that no one could come this close to Dolnar with me. Isn't it dangerous for Kari and the others to be traveling with us? What if Dolnar finds them?"

Egonas looked about at the three men who floated along ahead of him and Kristopher. "The Derulans have a natural defense against him. They have lived this close to Eyama for so long that they can hide from him when he searches. However, they couldn't withstand a direct encounter with him."

There was a pause for a moment as the aged magician looked to Kari. Kristopher's eyes never left him as he watched Egonas' expression change. They drifted along slowly until Kari looked back toward them.

"What are you lookin' at butt-head?" demanded the angered Lostarian. Before anyone could say another word, they felt themselves being pulled a bit harder by the river's current. Once again, they had to hold on tightly.

It wasn't long before they neared the junction in the river that Bokanary had told them about. "Stay to the left!" It was difficult to hear him as the drone of the moving river grew louder, but they understood what he meant by the gestures that he was making. Kristopher found it difficult to steer himself that way as the current pulled him the other direction. Egonas' staff reached him and touched his log. Immediately, he changed his course, joining the others. Seconds later, the stream began to move much faster and he was separated from the sorcerer.

As the river narrowed, its force increased even more. Bokanary looked back to them. "Hang on!!! We'll soon be going below ground!" he screamed. This time his words were audible. Moments later, Kristopher could see what he had meant. The river disappeared beneath the surface about fifty feet ahead of them. Kari yelled something to him, but he couldn't make out what he was saying (although he really didn't need to hear his words to have a good idea what it was). It only took a few moments for them to reach the abyss. The river poured into it drawing them with it. First Bokanary...then Xaddin...Kari...followed by Egonas and the finally...Kristopher.

They soon realized they were in a large underground tunnel as light from Egonas' staff lit up the rocky shaft. Each held onto his log tightly as the water led them through the corridor. After a few minutes of travel, the cavern began to widen and the water moved much slower. Kari's curses began to echo loudly as they drifted closer together.

"We're not far from the castle." announced Bokanary. "Watch for a ledge that will run along the left side of the cavern. When we reach it, we'll be able to walk upon it until we reach the well."

The ceiling of the underground cavern rose to about twenty feet high. The walls were made of smooth rock that had been eroded by the flowing water. Few words were spoken as they drifted except Kari's occasional mumbled curses. Suddenly, their speed began to increase. Bokanary turned back to them with a confused look on his face.

        "What now?!" demanded Kari.

"This is not supposed to happen. The water shouldn't be moving any faster!" They felt their speed increase. Egonas turned to Kristopher with an astonished look.

        "Sorcery...I can sense it!"

"What are you talking about, old timer?!"

"I knew that we couldn't trust these guys, Kris... They've led us right into a trap!"

Suddenly, the cavern became black as Egonas' staff stopped casting its illuminating glow.

        "Egonas!" called Kristopher.

"There's nothing I can do, lad. I am using all of my power to fight the spell that has us!"

"I can't believe that I let myself be talked into this!" complained Kari.

"Please stop whining!" cried Bokanary. "Fight the river! We have to stay to the left of the cavern if we are to reach the ledge!"

The darkness that surrounded them brought a deep fear into Kristopher's heart as he could no longer see Egonas. He fought the water's pull while he tried to stay to the left of the cavern as Bokanary had instructed. He bounced against the cavern wall as the water moved faster. A peculiar feeling entered his mind as he felt himself being pushed against the wall. It was as if there was a power...almost a presence next to him. No -- all around him! He continued to fight against the force of the moving water, but he could tell that he was losing the battle! It took all of his strength to hold onto the log and he could no longer keep it close to the wall.

He was being pulled beneath the surface of the underground stream. He opened his eyes felt the sting of the cold water. He fought the pain and looked about the blackness. Panic filled his mind as he fought desperately to pull himself above the water line. Suddenly, a faint glow appeared ahead of him. With all of his strength, he lifted his head above the surface and gasped for air. Ahead, to the left, the others were standing on the ledge that Bokanary had spoken of earlier. Egonas' staff, which was held toward him, lit up the corridor.

Once again, he was being pulled beneath the surface. He continued to fight the current and found himself heading toward the light. As he neared the ledge, the staff appeared before him. He reached out his left hand and grasped onto it. The river seemed to pull with an even greater force as he held it. Egonas too, fought the current as Kristopher grew numb with terror. He pulled desperately upon the staff until he began to feel faint, yet something inside wouldn't allow him to surrender. He continued to fight and the river continued to pull him when he sensed Egonas' mind reaching out to him. He listened intently and then it came to him.

"Cala atra spal due!" filled his thoughts beneath the water and the sword at his side began to glow. Suddenly, the river's pull was lessened until he no longer had to fight it. Immediately, he pulled himself above the surface and again began gasping for air. He let go of the magician's staff, grasping onto the ledge. Kari's strong hand clutched his own as he pulled him onto it.

The water became calm as the Lostarian warrior's chest lay upon the walkway. His long hair was stuck to his back as he panted. He looked up to the others. "What happened?" he whispered. It exhausted him to speak and he lowered his head and closed his eyes. Finally, Egonas said "It wanted you. The river wanted your power so that it could be added to its own. I spoke the spell of release when you were close enough for my magic to reach you."

Kristopher was silent as he tried to regain enough strength to stand. He was amazed that Kari said nothing to the sorcerer as he continued to lay upon the ridge, fighting to regain his breath. Finally, his friend spoke in a very quiet tone.

"Itold you that we shouldn't be here." he whispered.

Finally, Kristopher felt he had enough strength to stand. Immediately, Egonas and Bokanary each grasped an arm and aided him to his feet. Bokanary pointed downstream toward a beam of light that shone from the ceiling high above. "That is the well that leads up to the palace courtyard..."

Kristopher looked toward it for a moment and then turned to Egonas. "What do you mean 'the river wanted my power?'"

"That was his explanation for you getting caught in the current!" answered Kari.

The sorcerer scowled at him for a moment and then looked to Kristopher. "I don't fully understand it yet, but I do know that there is sorcery at work here. We shouldn't waste any more time. Let's make our way to the well!"

Immediately, Bokanary and Xaddin led them along the stone walkway toward the beam of light. Their steps were slow - carefully placed upon the slippery ledge. They all feared falling into the quickly flowing water, especially Kristopher! His mind was still buzzing with the memory of his recent encounter with the river.

As they reached the well, Kristopher looked up to view the source of the light. There was a hole in the ceiling that was about twenty feet above them. From the aperture came a rope that reached to within a few feet of the moving water. A small pail was tied to the end of it. It gently swayed back and forth above the river as they stared at it. Bokanary and Xaddin moved to the edge of the walkway. No one spoke as they watched them view the small bucket that moved side to side about twelve feet away from them. Bokanary then turned his back to the water and clasped his hands before him. Xaddin placed his foot within and they both crouched slightly.

"Are you ready?" asked Bokanary in a soft voice. Xaddin nodded his answer. Suddenly, Bokanary let out a yell and Xaddin flew into the air toward the pail. He landed in the water a few feet from it and began to fight the current in an attempt to reach it. Bokanary called out to him to fight the river's pull (advice he didn't really have to offer). Finally, the large man reached it and quickly grasped it with his right hand.

He immediately began to move down stream as the rest of the rope began to unravel high above him, but his journey was cut short as it obviously reached its end. With all of his strength, he made his way back to the others who held their hands out to grab him.

As they pulled him onto the ledge, Bokanary moved the rope to the wall and tied it to a rock that extended from it. He pulled on it twice, testing its strength and then turned back to the others. "Be silent when you reach the courtyard. There are many eyes watching the area." Immediately, he began to pull himself up the rope. Kristopher was awed by the man's strength as he quickly reached the top and disappeared through the hole in the ceiling.

Xaddin followed swiftly behind. As he disappeared, Egonas turned to Kari, "You're next, lad..."

"Not on your life, gramps! I'm not leaving Kristopher here alone with you!"

"He couldn't be safer. Now, don't waste any more time!" Egonas raised his staff above his head as he scolded the young Lostarian.

"Go ahead. I'll be alright." said Kristopher in a reassuring voice. Kari shook his head and then started to make his way up the rope.

"He's only thinking of my safety." said Kristopher as he read the rage in the magician's eyes.

"Indeed..." was the reply. Egonas looked up the ceiling where the others had already disappeared through the well. He then looked back to Kristopher. "As soon as I reach the top, untie the rope and follow me." He placed his hand upon Kristopher's shoulder and then grasped the rope. Immediately, he began to struggle upwards, making sure not to drop his staff.

As Kristopher watched him rising higher, a peculiar feeling filled his heart. He could sense a presence all around him. Suddenly, he noticed that the water level was beginning to rise. He could hear Egonas calling to him from above. He looked up the ceiling, but was unable to make out what the sorcerer was saying.

The water level continued to heighten as he released the rope from the wall and began pulling himself upward. His Lostarian strength enabled him to move swiftly, but it appeared that the river was ascending faster. The cavern filled with the sound of raging water as he moved up further. Soon, it reached to his knees. He struggled to climb faster and the river seemed to follow. Egonas continued to call to him, but his voice was still buried by the rushing river. He soon found himself submerged to his chest. The force of the river tugged at him much harder as it continued to rise. It soon became very difficult for him to hold on to the rope. He found that it took every ounce of strength he possessed to keep from being dragged into the current.

The water line increased again and he was loosing his grip. Moments later, it reached to his shoulders. He had made his way to within about ten feet from the ceiling. Egonas was reaching out to him, calling his name. He was close enough to make out his cries for the young warrior to move faster.

Suddenly, the presence he felt began to call out to him. He didn't hear the words as much as sense them. "Come...Join with us...Merge with our strength...our wisdom...our life..."

The words seemed to flow through his mind...intoxicating him with a feeling of peace. He felt himself surrendering to the call to release his grip. The voice continued to flow through him as the water rose higher. Suddenly, another presence entered his thoughts...Egonas!

"Don't listen, lad! Remember your quest! Don't let go of the rope!!" Kristopher was unable to move. The water level rose higher and began to cover his head. Suddenly, he felt the rope being pulled from above him. As his head passed out of the water, he could hear the others calling from above telling him to hold on tightly.

Soon, he reached the top of the cavern. The water followed his ascent closely and constantly covered his face, causing him to gasp for air. His mind was filled with thoughts of letting go and ending the battle, but Egonas would call out to hold on. Finally, he reached the ceiling and began up the well. Again, the presence called to him. "Come back...We can relieve you of your burden! Come back and become one with us!"

The sorcerer's magic surrounded him and the voices no longer affected him. He began to pull himself up the rope and soon the exhausted warrior exited from the well. It was early dawn and the amber sun shone a dim light from the horizon. Kristopher found that they were in the centre of a large courtyard as they laid him upon his back next to the well. Egonas eyed him with a concerned look as he silently waited for him to regain his breath.

In a few moments, the warrior was breathing normally and he slowly began to rise. The courtyard was silent save for the music of the waking birds.

"What was that?" asked the bewildered warrior.

"I don't know", answered Egonas. "As soon as I reached the well, my magic could no longer reach you."

"We couldn't pull on the rope either", added Bokanary. "There seemed to be a great force controlling us..."

"I told you that we shouldn't be here! Of all the places we could be right now..." said Kari. Deep within, Kristopher began to agree with his friend. Looking about, he found that Derul was actually one massive castle that spread out over the area as far as the could see! Its size was awesome and he guessed that there must be thousands of rooms in it!

"We must make our way to the palace right away!" cautioned Bokanary. "Follow us!" Immediately, he and Xaddin ran across the courtyard toward a large hedge that grew like a massive fence around the court. The others followed as the sun's light was bright enough to reveal their presence to anyone who might look from the castle.

The moved along the hedge toward the gray castle. As they neared it, Bokanary stopped them.

"We're in time. They haven't completed the changing of the guards. While the shift changes, the court doors are unguarded. We won't have any problem getting in."

Bokanary motioned them to continue and once again they headed for the castle. Soon, they reached an oak door that Xaddin immediately opened. Moments later, they were in a dark room. A dull light shone from Egonas' staff, silhouetting the gray walls. Ahead of them, a stairway moved up the wall, leading to another door. Bokanary led them to it.

Silently, they ascended the staircase. Egonas' staff no longer cast its light and they noticed small beams shining from cracks in the door. Bokanary motioned them to become still as he reached it. He placed his left ear against it and then slowly turned the handle. The door opened without a sound. Seconds later, the rightful king of Derul turned to them. A smile appeared as he opened the door. He slowly opened it further and bright light cascaded into the room. Quickly, he poked his head past it, looking all around. He then turned back to the others who watched him silently.

"The way is clear. Follow me."

He immediately led them from the room. They were at the intersection of two hallways. One ran from the left to right and the other away from them as far as they could see. Without hesitation, Bokanary led them to their left. They moved along with their right shoulders almost touching the right side of the stone hallway. Lighted torches hung from it about every fifteen feet casting their shadows onto the other wall. Kristopher reached for his sword. As he contacted it, he felt the reassurance of its power and his hand returned to its position against the wall.

After moments of silent travel, Bokanary stopped them before a door on the left side of the hallway. He placed his ear against it and then made a fist with his right hand. He tapped it three times quickly followed by three times slowly. Moments later, it opened swiftly into a room and a tall Derulan soldier dressed in similar armor worn by Xaddin and Bokanary stood before them.

"Bok...We feared that you might have been killed by Flyton!"

"Not so, Capal. Xaddin and I have been waiting for the right moment to return. I've brought some friends." he said motioning to the others. He led them into the room as he spoke and introduced them one at a time.

"Then, the time has come to overthrow Flyton?" asked Capal in an excited tone.

"As soon as I get these men through the city..." he answered.

"That won't be possible. Flyton has doubled the guards on the other side of the city."

        "Doubled them? Why?!"

"He wouldn't say. I heard it rumored that he spoke of a key. I feared that he might be speaking of the Hemma key."

Bokanary turned to Egonas and then to Kristopher. "Could he know?"

"I thought it seemed strange that the river tried so hard to get Kristopher. Nolebes has done such damage to this world! Somehow Flyton and the river are joined. It can't be a direct link or there would have been guards waiting for us at the well. I believe the river is the source of Flyton's power. The spirit within the river wants the key!"

        "For Dolnar?" asked Kristopher.

"No. If they were connected, then the Skullots would be here. The river is separate from him. It is now clear to me why the guardians refused to let magicians into Derul. The river/spirit knows that I would be able to fight it, although it surprises me that it knows that a magician survived the changing of the ages."

"What power does Flyton possess?" asked Kristopher.

"I don't think he has any of his own." answered Egonas. "I believe that he draws power from the river."

"How can we defeat him?" asked Capal.

Kari pulled his sword from its sheath. "This'll do it. Give me a moment with him and the guy'll be toast!"

"I'm afraid not." said Egonas. "If I am right, then Flyton will be extremely powerful as long as he has communion with the river. Your sword won't harm him."

"We'll see about that! Remember, pal...I don't believe your fairy stories!"

"What can we do?" asked Bokanary.

"I must battle Flyton. He must be taken to the well so that I can send him to the river/spirit."

"Then the time has finally come for the revolt?" asked Capal.

"So it would appear." answered Derul's true king. "You must spread this command to all who still obey my rule. Tell them all to wear their silver mail. Flyton's followers will be clad in the traditional black. This way we will see our enemies clearly. We will await your return here in your chamber."

Capal saluted his king and the two grasped forearms. "I shall return as quickly as possible, my king." announced the young Derulan soldier. Immediately, he disappeared from the room, closing the door behind him. As he left, Kristopher made his way to a small bed that was placed beneath an opened window. Reaching it, he immediately fell upon it letting out a deep sigh. He still found himself feeling quite weary from his battle with the river.

"I wonder if anyone else is after the power of the key." he thought aloud.

Egonas moved to his side and said, "Derul is a very special place. Her people have the great burden of being the last city before Dolnar's prison. Some of your ancestors have stayed here - many years ago. The Elders felt it safe since Dolnar can't reach this city. But it is obvious that he has grown much too powerful for you to be allowed that luxury. There are many who would seek the power of the Hemma key, but few would be foolish enough to venture this close to Eyama."

Kristopher reflected upon what the sorcerer had said to him. Suddenly, he heard shouting from outside the window. Immediately, he sat up and looked into the courtyard below. "Egonas...Look at this!" They all moved to the window . They saw Flyton and five guards running to the well. As they reached it, Flyton looked into the shaft. Moments later, he looked back to the guards and then pointed to the palace. Shouting an inaudible command to them, he watched his guards run across the court toward the palace. He remained beside the well with his left hand holding his right fist.

"He knows that the key is here..." said Egonas.

"Capal had better hurry or we won't stand a chance!" added Bokanary. "We must get the Keeper through the main gates if he is to complete his quest!"

"You should've listened to the me, Kris! I swear to you, if we get through this city, I'm gonna take you back to Lostar!"

Suddenly, footsteps could be heard echoing through the hall. Someone was knocking on all of the doors, calling out the names of those who slept within the rooms. They all removed their weapons as the knocking got closer. Egonas held his staff before him and speaking a spell, it became a shining silver sword.

Finally, a knock came to Capal's door.

"Capal. The king needs you!" There was silence. "Wake up you lazy swine, we are under attack!" Each man tensed himself, preparing to face the guard. Suddenly, the door flew open and a guard dressed in black stood before them. Immediately, his sword rose from his side as he viewed the five men before him.

"Bokanary! Xaddin! You?! Capal will pay dearly for this treason!"

"It isn't Capal who is the traitor. It is you who has betrayed our people!"

"I follow the commands of my king! I am loyal to the crown, no matter how it was placed. I follow Flyton's commands as I followed yours. And his command is that you are an outlaw!"

"Listen to me! Flyton is ruler by trickery and deceit! No man should rule that way! In the name of our forefathers, Flyton must be overthrown!

"It was our forefathers who made the rules by which we live, Bokanary. When I was made a guard, I spoke an oath that I would follow the commands of the crown at risk of my own life!" As the guard finished these words, he was joined by five other guards all dressed in black. Immediately, he ordered one of them to inform the king of Bokanary's presence in Capal's chamber. Then he and the remaining four entered the room holding their swords before them.

Bokanary tried once again to convince them to join him, but it appeared to him that it was useless. Slowly, he and Xaddin raised their swords and then put them in the pose of challenge (which was to hold them at shoulder's height parallel to the ground with the tip pointing to the left). Cautiously, the guards moved toward them as they waited for the signal that the challenge would be accepted.
